A two note school-ruler-on-desktop buzz jam.<\/p>\n

Snares crackle, bass drums thud,<\/p>\n

And a haunted voice carrying fragile strands of melody
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 hovers somewhere between speech and song,<\/p>\n

A cotton wool whisper:<\/p>\n

Child\u2019s play electronic riffs are omnipresent and repeated obsessively
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>spraying notes in all directions.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not the future of rock.<\/p>\n

It may not even be rock at all.<\/p>\n

A fruity mouth harp and a raw bellow\u2026<\/p>\n

Snippets of voices, held together crudely with the audio equivalent of sellotape,<\/p>\n

string, staples:<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.sound.\u201d
\u201cSound\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026…imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It drifts, lapping at the shores of exertion, occasionally crashing into great washes of\u00a0guitar.<\/p>\n

A moment of twee home-organ, before the main theme crashes back down on top of it\u00a0like a seafront wave.<\/p>\n

The celestial Wurlitzer,<\/p>\n

The ectoplasmic melodica,<\/p>\n

And then it ends.<\/p>\n

8-Bit Refrain<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A Bo Diddley beat.<\/p>\n

A simple riff played rock-solid in relentless repetition:

It’s the drums that call the tune, percussing all over the place, banging and<\/p>\n

scraping and thumping,<\/p>\n

And the simple riff
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 A two-note tour de force,<\/p>\n

played rock-solid in relentless repetition:<\/p>\n

All zingy and colourful.<\/p>\n

A punchy torrent of stabbing horns and buzz bomb basslines,<\/p>\n

(Bass jabs and brass stabs),<\/p>\n

A chorus and a bleep.<\/em><\/p>\n

You can hear the third chorus coming a mile away \u2013 the guitar painstakingly
scaling the fret board, the drummer getting ready,<\/p>\n

Feedback, percussive clatter and the click of pickups spitting,<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The stop-start riff like a giant\u2019s fist in spasm,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0

A rock’n’roll disco moonburst,<\/p>\n

And a Bleep.<\/em><\/p>\n

In Helvetica<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Floating cities of rust, shadowy cellars stacked with fading parchment. Such is
the sonic landscape being explored.<\/p>\n

Guitar and cello sounds get round behind you like shore birds at dusk,<\/p>\n

Samples float through a half awake haze,<\/p>\n

With the vocals beamed down from the astral plane,<\/p>\n

A breathless girl saying;<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWrite my name,
In Helvetica.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There are no sirens wailing here, no chasms of dub, no babies crying, rewinds
or church bells phased backwards.<\/p>\n

Just a few dried-up notes of banjo or guitar,<\/p>\n

Loose, soulful ripples
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ring and resound in an unusual, parched red valley reverb,<\/p>\n

The fragile, fractured voice wandering aimlessly around somewhere near the
middle of the mix;<\/span><\/p>\n

In Helvetica.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The musical accompaniment recedes.<\/p>\n

Rattling around like a pea in a drum, a lone pianist<\/p>\n

Evokes images of places you\u2019ve never visited,
times you\u2019ve never had, with people you never knew; it\u2019s like being haunted
by someone else\u2019s ghost.<\/p>\n

The gossamer voice weaves a web of wonder<\/p>\n

Its ghostly resonances bellow and distort perception like mist on a moorland;<\/p>\n
